Evan Grant – Making sound visible through cymatics

Evan Grant works with cymatics, the art of visualizing sound, and is the founder of the arts and technology collective seeper. He is exploring natural user interaction and universal computing to create multi-sensorial experiences and memories.
He is really inspiring especially in this talk, there are really just a few people who go deeper in sound science, and how sound effects our minds and body. I will search for more of these kind of articles to show how important sounds for each of our single cell in our body is and how sounds has a certain impact on materials.

“Participants are invited to create a drawing that is woven into a collective tribute to Johnny Cash, set to his song “Ain’t No Grave.” The project was inspired by the song’s central lyric, “ain’t no grave gonna hold my body down,” and represents Cash’s continued existence, even after his death, through his music and his fans. The work continues to grow and evolve as more people participate. A collaboration with director Chris Milk.”

Daito Manabe came to Berlin to perform with his face visualizer i posted about before. Unluckily i missed the performance and i´m glad i found the video of his performance over at todayandtomorrow.

“The Face Visualizer is a tool which lets people’s faces move artificially in sync with music through electroshocks produced with the Max/MSP programming platform.”

Simply amazing work.

I just love Data Visualizations. Informations are such a big thing in our generation. Its everywhere around us, so we need to emotionalize them in an optical way and it is just mesmerizing to see a lot of data packages beautiful visualized, especially when you need to handle complex data.Visual codes of informations. Hakim El Hattab has his creative lab and interactive playground on http://hakim.se/experiments/. He is “dedicated to the exploration of interaction, visual effects and technologies.”
He was involved in the development of the 20thingsilearned.com by Google, which is amazing showcase of what can be done with Html5. Be sure to check out his experiments with a modern browser (FF 3.6+, Safari, Chrome). Keylight is certainly my favourite..

“This film explores playful uses for the increasingly ubiquitous ‘glowing rectangles’ that inhabit the world.
We use photographic and animation techniques that were developed to draw moving 3-dimensional typography and objects with an iPad. In dark environments, we play movies on the surface of the iPad that extrude 3-d light forms as they move through the exposure. Multiple exposures with slightly different movies make up the stop-frame animation.”

A demo (from the demoscene) is mostly a non-interactive audio-visual presentation that runs in real-time on a computer. This one is done with Java and can be download as a executable for PC here http://holon.drastic.net/. Credits go to one of my former colleagues rtz23 and pandrr. Love the outcome and the powerful colors.. couldnt get it to run on a pc though. I´d love to see how it works in real time.

A very interesting approach to create a graphic user interface for mobile djs. I like the design and the way functionality can be controlled intuitively once you are familiar with the system. Still i can´t really imagine that you can always beatmatch perfectly with just tapping the screen. To make this work, there should be a way of spinning each side to control the record / track with ease..
In my opinion on a professional level this concept is hard to deliver, but for the more private and entertainment sector this stuff is great. Specially with all the mobile devices coming.. Good work!
