Irina Werning has a very nice ongoing project: Back to the Future. She asked family and friends to reenact old pictures of themselves. She writes:

“I love old photos. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today… A few months ago, I decided to actually do this. So, with my camera, I started inviting people to go back to their future.”

“Each day, we are surrounded by seemingly insignificant objects, taking them from one place to the other, or leaving them on a table for weeks, without paying any attention to them. We ignore or forget them, using things only when we need to, making sure they don’t interfere or inhabit our space. But what if they were not so stable and subservient? What if they could swivel, bounce or even fly. And what if they did so all at the same time? We want to imagine a place where objects could live and move, harmoniously, and of their own accord. Without interfering with each other these objects would bounce, roll, turn and cross each other’s paths.

This experiment is about re-discovering our daily surroundings. This is the making of the interactive video that was originally made for If You Could Collaborate exhibition.

What an awesome and talented guy. Gifted with an extraordinary design mind. In this video he allows us a insight look in his Design work from the beginning on and also he presents Universal Everything. An Introduction into the work flow and process of his projects. And he has some wise comments, we should think about, if we are in to this world of design.

It is quite long, but I didn’t get bored or something. He speaks in a relaxed manner and the information are conditioned in a way that you dont’t lose concentration.

Take yourself some time and enjoy the presentation of his inspiring work.

Wildlife by Mission Design

Actually it is not the newest Design stuff (2008), but it is timeless. Design, which i really appreciate, on the strength of the handling with the black white contrast and the composition of white space and figures. And of course it is always a challenge to combine photoghraphs with illustrations. It feels kind of real, but as a result of the overfilling illustration, the graphic gets a mystic and surrealistic touch, like an extract of a fairy-tale.

Mission Design:

“When working on client projects we occasionaly come up with concepts and ideas that not always fit the client brief, but still has great potential. “Wildlife” is one such idea.
We chose to invest quite some time on this project, together with the photographer Pål Laukli. It turned out to be a project we are very proud of.”

Photographer Rune Guneriussen from Norway combines Landscapes with household objects. The description from “Cool Hunting” is way better then anything i could write:

“The scenes capture a peculiarly Nordic combination of otherworldliness and dark humor. A herd of desk lamps turn their lighted heads downwards to graze in the twilight of a lonely Savannah. Two chairs battle for supremacy on a lonely beach amidst a group of helpless bystanders. A line of telephones negotiates a stony mountain pass.

While Guneriussen offers no interpretations of her work, the surreal juxtaposition of man-made objects with distinctly wild settings evokes the fragility and ultimately the ridiculousness of man’s efforts to subdue nature. The clean, sterile lines of the objects stand in defiant contrast to the ragged edges of the stones, waves and trees around them. “

I really like this contrast, the colors and lights of nordic landscapes. Some could be mimicking animals, others are just completely misplaced..i think “Telefon” is my favourite.
And there´s lots of other great work on her website. I specially like “Evolution” and “Kraft”.

Stop Motion Animation Film “Lucia & Luis”

This video is wicked. I love the pictures, the dark and eerie atmosphere with these japanese horror elements. The execution of the idea and the the style of the stop motion effects let the whole video become a masterpiece of its own. The commission of the Illustrative thought the same and they decided to exhibit it. It’s now displayed in Berlin. I was there and it is worth to visit the exhibition, the work is terrific and expressive. The artists are very talented and you can see a whole bunch of styles, which creates the current illustration movements.

Established in Berlin in 2006, Illustrative has been held twice in Berlin (2006 & 2007), once in Paris (2007), and once in Zürich (2008). Being a big success right from the start it managed to be the leading international forum for contemporary illustration and graphic arts. It’s Taking place from October 16 – November 1 in Berlin.
