This featured mix from percussionlab has the genre description: Roots & Acid, boards of africa, roof music, dub. I can only say this is one of the best, more chilled, seamlessly mixed eclectic dub and roots mix i´ve heard in a while (after the Black Family crew from good ol Portugal that is). Its interesting to see Burial, Mala and Kode9 mixed with Fat Freddys Drop and Boards of Canada. “Dub is about space. The space where guitars used to be, the space between beats, the space that echos create. DJ Olive absorbed this maxim in the 90’s, when you were still sucking pacifiers on the dancefloors of abandoned warehouses. He invented the term illbient, only to later claim the term was a joke. He’s one of the few dj’s successfully riding the line between in your face artistic expression and dancefloor palatability. from sound installations at Whitney Biennial, the Venice Biennale, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, to freaking the bins at Dub War over the last few years, he’s both an entertainer and an educator.

This mix is a dub mix from a NYC originator – it’s about space, man. Light one up, lay back, and enjoy.”

A demo (from the demoscene) is mostly a non-interactive audio-visual presentation that runs in real-time on a computer. This one is done with Java and can be download as a executable for PC here http://holon.drastic.net/. Credits go to one of my former colleagues rtz23 and pandrr. Love the outcome and the powerful colors.. couldnt get it to run on a pc though. I´d love to see how it works in real time.

Another great all day soundtrack by the online radio channel – ByteFM.

This is not just another radio-stream but a real independent radio channel – quality stuff. Based in Hamburg and founded by the Musicjournalist Ruben Jonas Schnell it went live in January 2008 – and just a couple of weeks ago, the Ruhr-Studio in Bochum started broadcasting via the worldwide web, too. Of course, without any commercial breaks its being financed only via free donations.
The focus is on music made by voluntary musicians, journalists and many other music nerds.
So tune in, check it out and get inspired by new sounds without any boundaries. (klickonpic)

The artist Sally Davies photographed one McDonald’s hamburger and fries every day for 137 days. I am baffled, as they look almost the same. Any type of organic substance would decompose with microbes from the air…not the Happy meal. You stomach might be stronger then microbes but i wouldnt say that its easy to digest this stuff. Think about this next time you wanna stop at the burger place..

Gilles Peterson Summer Jazz Mix

Who doesn´t know about Gilles Peterson? For those who really don´t here´s a small introduction i found at his website:

ZSO also known as Sara Blake does some amazing Illustration work. Last night i was watching Justin Mallers live transmition on ustream and he commented about her and led me to the site. Nice way of finding out about new stuff.. So anyway, she is truly talented and does some very cool stuff. Here´s what she writes on her about page:

“Hello, I’m ZSO. (On paper you may also know me as Sara Blake.) I’m an Interactive Art Director, Designer, and Illustrator living and loving in New York City.

ZSO (pronounced |zō|) is a collection of letters that I find aesthetically and phonetically beautiful. Together they make sound much like “so,” the adverb which means “to such a great extent.” I am a person of extremes, for better or worse (most often the latter), so the ring of it was fitting, and the moniker has since stuck for good.

A very interesting approach to create a graphic user interface for mobile djs. I like the design and the way functionality can be controlled intuitively once you are familiar with the system. Still i can´t really imagine that you can always beatmatch perfectly with just tapping the screen. To make this work, there should be a way of spinning each side to control the record / track with ease..
In my opinion on a professional level this concept is hard to deliver, but for the more private and entertainment sector this stuff is great. Specially with all the mobile devices coming.. Good work!

Dalton Ghetti’s micro pencil art

Amazing work, if i just think off the fragility of a pencil tip.

“Brazilian born, Connecticut based, Dalton Ghetti carefully crafts the tips of pencils into amazing micro sculptures. These miniature masterpieces are a side project for the professional carpenter, who has been perfecting this art for the last 25 years. Dalton uses a razor blade, sewing needle, a sculpting knife, a steady hand and lots of patience to meticulously carve the graphite which can take anywhere between a few months to a few years.”

I guess the more musically inclined reader should know this dude. Besides, being the producer of many Bob Marley and the Wailers records, Lee scratch Perry and Mad Professor where something like the inventors of psychedelic funk and helped the emergence of Reggae, Ska and of course Dub in Jamaica. There is a quote that I read that pretty much gets to the heart of it: „Lee „Scratch“Perry is the Salvador Dalí of Dub.“

So this outstanding musician – living legend has made a new record with release date aujourd’hui (10.08.2010). Maybe it is not the best album he ever made, but it is definitely worth mentioning. This guy is still making tunes being 74 years old. I am not sure how many records actually go on his account, he might have produced one for every year that he lived…

Revelation is somehow less bubbly and psychedelic then some of his former work but its none the less interesting. It shows a new side in his music. It’s actually really funny in parts having a thoughtful and Ironic approach towards topics of our time. For instance the diss of the Kabbalah hype in the track books of Moses or the mockery on Michael Jackson asking “why did your cut of your nose? why did you change your big pretty nose into a little little funny nose?”, in the track freaky Michael.
