The Vimeo film festival and awards

October 20th, 2010 // No Comments // Posted by Lukas

The vimeo film festival and awards has its winners. Vimeo turned into “the” host for creative and artistic videos on the web, so the awards + festival work as a “celebration of the best original and creative video that has premiered online”. The goal was to “reward the individual creators behind online video and acknowledge the internet as a quality medium of expression and distribution”. It was about time this happened.. the goal was similar to Youtube Play i posted some time ago, that was supposed to raise awareness on this topic. Vimeo did a great job.

Here is my selection:

- Winner Best Video

Last Minutes with ODEN from phos pictures on Vimeo.

- Winner Experimental

oops from Chris Beckman on Vimeo.

- Winner Music Video

Liars “Scissor” from A Bruntel on Vimeo.

Aaron Rose / Beautiful Loser Movement

October 18th, 2010 // No Comments // Posted by Andrea

Circleculture Gallery, Berlin presents “Trouble”, new works by Aaron Rose, which give very personal and direct insights into the artist’s mind. Aaron Rose is perhaps best known as a curator. With his touring show Beautiful Losers and the documentary of the same name, he brought underground artists to public attention, championing a DIY aesthetic informed by their various backgrounds as skaters, punk rock fans and graffiti writers.

Aaron Rose is a lot more of an influence than you probably ever thought. He’s responsible for the large-scale, traveling museum exhibition titled “Beautiful Losers” (there’s a book too), he’s a writer and independent curator who shows all over the world, and he was the owner/director of the highly influential Alleged Gallery in New York for 10 years.

shots of his current art exhibition in the circleculture gallery in Berlin:

For this show he has a particular obsession: painting on suitcases. “Suitcases from the 50s to 70s were manufactured in such interesting color palettes – these incredible mustard yellows and army greens,” he says. Rose calls the works (some of which are stuffed with surprise goodies for buyers to walk away with) “object paintings,” displaying them in the spirit of Duchamp. Art historical references aside, the show’s conceptual slant is psychological, personal even. “It’s my baggage,” says Rose. “The exhibition is going to be very much a confession, what all my problems are.”

“LAKAIROMANIA” for Lakai by Ty Evans

Lakai ist back and on fire.  The video for “Lakai Skate and Create 2010″ is all about the asthetics of skateboarding with some dark and fireish atmosphere. The sound track is great and the credits speak for themselves. I get nostalgic when i watch this, thinking of my times as a skateboarder.. Good days!

Illustrations by ZSO

ZSO also known as Sara Blake does some amazing Illustration work. Last night i was watching Justin Mallers live transmition on ustream and he commented about her and led me to the site. Nice way of finding out about new stuff.. So anyway, she is truly talented and does some very cool stuff. Here´s what she writes on her about page:

“Hello, I’m ZSO. (On paper you may also know me as Sara Blake.) I’m an Interactive Art Director, Designer, and Illustrator living and loving in New York City.
ZSO (pronounced |zō|) is a collection of letters that I find aesthetically and phonetically beautiful. Together they make sound much like “so,” the adverb which means “to such a great extent.” I am a person of extremes, for better or worse (most often the latter), so the ring of it was fitting, and the moniker has since stuck for good.

See more of here work on her website (www.hellozso.com) and check out the interviews on dazed digital and thee blog (to name a few). By the way..thats her.

Dalton Ghetti’s micro pencil art

August 17th, 2010 // No Comments // Posted by Lukas

Amazing work, if i just think off the fragility of a pencil tip.

“Brazilian born, Connecticut based, Dalton Ghetti carefully crafts the tips of pencils into amazing micro sculptures. These miniature masterpieces are a side project for the professional carpenter, who has been perfecting this art for the last 25 years. Dalton uses a razor blade, sewing needle, a sculpting knife, a steady hand and lots of patience to meticulously carve the graphite which can take anywhere between a few months to a few years.”
