S13 aka Justinas Mikulskis

November 12th, 2010 // No Comments // Posted by Lukas

S13 aka Justinas Mikulskis from Lithuania was kind enough to hook up via E-Mail and to send me his mix “Now, Voyager II”. He put together a really good selection of chilled downtempo and bass sounds, sometimes with a dark twist , in some tracks a little lighter. The perfect autumn sound and nicely crafted. Be sure to check out part 1.
Furthermore he produces some good experimental bass tunes.. Check out his “Yourself EP”, free to download on Soundcloud.  Thanks Justinas

Brendon Moeller ist known for his eclectic taste, great productions and shows it once again. This epic set has a length off over 4hrs and appearently went on even longer, as his recording device ran out of batteries. It includes a vast selection of artists going from vladislav delay, dorian concept, lone, king tubby, calibre, stereolab, harmonic 313, gang star, lou rawls, the orb, tribe called quest, einsturzende neubaten, suicide, lee perry, ian dury, deep chord, the specials, jimi hendrix, the commodores, inxs, modeselektor, steely dan and more.

I haven´t heard such a eclectic selection in one mix for long, if not to say never. A real trip. Dear Brendon, thank you!

DJ Olive – Let Us Live Mix

September 2nd, 2010 // No Comments // Posted by Lukas

This featured mix from percussionlab has the genre description: Roots & Acid, boards of africa, roof music, dub. I can only say this is one of the best, more chilled, seamlessly mixed eclectic dub and roots mix i´ve heard in a while (after the Black Family crew from good ol Portugal that is). Its interesting to see Burial, Mala and Kode9 mixed with Fat Freddys Drop and Boards of Canada. The extensive tracklist (after the jump) shows how much music is seamlessly squeezed into this great mixtape! Find out more about DJ Olive on his website.
Here´s the original description for the mix:

“Dub is about space. The space where guitars used to be, the space between beats, the space that echos create. DJ Olive absorbed this maxim in the 90′s, when you were still sucking pacifiers on the dancefloors of abandoned warehouses. He invented the term illbient, only to later claim the term was a joke. He’s one of the few dj’s successfully riding the line between in your face artistic expression and dancefloor palatability. from sound installations at Whitney Biennial, the Venice Biennale, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, to freaking the bins at Dub War over the last few years, he’s both an entertainer and an educator.
This mix is a dub mix from a NYC originator – it’s about space, man. Light one up, lay back, and enjoy.”

Gilles Peterson Summer Jazz Mix

August 22nd, 2010 // No Comments // Posted by Lukas

Who doesn´t know about Gilles Peterson? For those who really don´t here´s a small introduction i found at his website:

“Music lover, record collector, DJ, broadcaster… Perhaps most famous for his much loved genre-exploding radio shows on BBC Radio 1 (and 17 other stations around the world including Japan’s leading commercial station J-Wave), Gilles’ insatiable appetite for new music undoubtedly lies at the heart of his success. Worldwide is 10 years young and fresher than ever – a benchmark for broadcasters the world over; global demand for his DJ sets is at an all-time high; the mighty Worldwide Festival (held annually in France and Singapore) curated by GP just gets better and better; and as for his record label Brownswood Recordings? Well, it just goes from strength to strength.”

Gilles great shows on BBC Radio 1 and his eclectic podcasts have been crossing my path many times and it was always a pleasure. Now, i do have a strong focus on electronic music in this Blog but this is great for a change!
Jazz..for those summer nights that are hopefully still to come.

Falty DL – XLR8R Podcast 138

May 20th, 2010 // 1 Comment // Posted by Lukas

Falty DL has surprised our ears with many good tracks and mixtapes. I loved his Bravery EP, and the track Party, released on a 12″ on Ramp Recordings, is probably one of my 2009 favourites. I am very happy to spread this great podcast mixed by Falty DL including many of his own tracks blending perfectly with other 2-step, dubstep and garage tracks.
This one is very soulful and for easy listening..i really enjoy it.

Its already the scecond XLR8R Podcast is post here this month, but i you really gotta say…they are really doing a great job on the podcasts; also Trentemoller did an epic mix 2 weeks ago. I am very pleased!
